A striking production of the opera

This CD is a recording of the Glyndebourne production of Giulio Cesare, which updates the action to the 19th Century. Action i s the operative word, as the problem for modern audiences with baroque opera is their essentially static nature which makes them challenging for all but the most dedicated devotees. This production introduces a significant amount of stage business to accompany the first-class singing. Danielle de Niese's Cleopatra is worth the price of the DVD alone, though perhaps a performance that could upset traditionalists.
