Don't bother
SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. Sorry this is not a good version of this show. I disagree with one of the reviewers that there aren't good songs in it. It does have a very good score. BUT the stars do nothing with this show. Richard Harris is better than I expected but to trying to hard to be ingratiating. Pity Richard Burton didn't make it when he was in his prime. Vanessa Redgrave looks lovely but is no singer. And Franco Nero is no Robert Goulet vocally or visually. For lover of the original show this film is a let down. Pretty to look at but that's all.

Nostalgia trip
I saw this as an impressionable teenager and never forgot it. Never thought I'd find it again. I loved both Maria Schell & Marius Goring in it. Her smile lights up the screen and her fragility and vulnerability shine through. It was a treat to see Marius Goring in a more sympathetic role. I loved the music and the scene when they first play together on the piano- just lovely. Their situation was impossible which it made it more moving. Yes, in comparison to today's films with their graphic love scenes it does appear stiff. It was made in the era of strict censorship which does limit it. But it is still a very sweet film to have in one's collection.
