Information about early French sound films is surprisingly hard to find. Plenty of opinions and learned papers on the psychology and sociological importance of French cinema, but very few books (or indeed websites) providing the hard facts. What film, who directed, who starred, synopsis etc. In Britain we have Dennis Gifford's British Film Catalogue and Quinlan's British Sound Film, to do the job, Germany has Karlheinz Wendtland's excellent Geliebter Kintopp series, and this splendid volume & it's follow-up 1935-39 are without doubt the only complete reference works encompassing all French productions up to WWII. Absolutely essential for any world cinema enthusiast's library
