not up to the standards of modern Early Music groups
These are 1970s recordings and quite old-fashioned in singing style - too much vibrato. Between that and the lower recording quality, the sound becomes quite murky. Maybe I'm fussy, but I found I couldn't listen to it. Shame because it is great music, and cheap!

'the tunes were learned from films, old records, or someone called Pete.'
Quirky, unpretentious, yet a master of his instrument, Tony Hall is a real hero of English traditional music and deserves to be much more widely known and celebrated. This is a deeply satisfying and joyful album...the cover is a bit off-putting though!

average
This is pretty average, both as to the selection and arrangement of carols (many of which are fairly standard repertoire), and as to the singing. Tbh if I'd realised Lucy Skeaping was involved I'd have avoided it; her singing is always redolent of Play School. There are plenty of better Folk Christmas albums out there, including Saydisc's own Celtic Christmas and the York Waits' Christmas Musicke.
