What a ride!
I loved this book and the best thing is that I have gone on to read the other two books in the trilogy and they are all incredibly imaginative, detailed and compelling, and wildly romantic. What a ride! I just wish there were more!

History, Mystery and Adventure!
A beautiful book which I have so enjoyed reading, and full of a sense of history, mystery and naturalistic detail. A delight. I am an adult who has only just discovered the work of Elizabeth Goudge and having read one of her books for adults -The Scent of Water-and adored it, decided to read some of her work for children. Clearly a writer who was a ahead of her time she sensed how important it was for children to have a sense of personal empowerment, freedom and a deep engagement with the natural world. It also acknowledges and explores the wisdom that comes with older age and how much we can learn from and also support each other, how the spontaneity, innocence and joy of children can help adults become free from the rigours of society's expectations and how children can learn how a sense of the past and the message for the future it brings is worth having the patience to explore in relationship with wise elders. Details of the natural world abound and a sense of the abundance and beauty of nature, and how it protects and nurtures us as long as we respect its power and listen to the lessons it holds for us. If you remember a childhood where you climbed, rode and explored outdoors you will love reconnecting with the sense of freedom and joy in those long days when there was so much to do and to learn through play, and coming home hungry and muddy and ready for supper and bed time, ready to find a new adventure the next day was so rich and experience of being alive. She also was keenly aware of how each life has its value, and of social divisions and the inequality they represented whilst also adhering to a love of the traditional and the folkloric. Rich and detailed language, rhyme and song, and strong and colourful characters each with their own defined personality, and the real gift of a fine story teller, will keep me looking for the works of this remarkable writer. I am hoping that my 9 year old grand daughter will enjoy this book too. You will never look at bees in quite the same way again!
