    The Madcap Laughs (CD 1994)
Pink Floyd were one of the most promising psychedelic bands in the UK, achieving great success with the hits 'Arnold Layne' and 'See Emily Play', plus the psych classic 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'. However, Syd Barrett, the band's leading light, began to become increasingly wayward and unreliable, which was reflected in the records he was making at this time, like 'Vegetable Man', 'Apples And Oranges' and 'Jugband Blues', which were littered with clues about Syd's state of mind. Syd was out of Floyd soon after, and they ploughed their own furrow of long, improvised avant garde rock. Syd, however, continued with his eccentric pop tunes, yet the music was in a different form in his solo career to the work he did with Floyd, and is more akin to acoustic based lysergic riddles. However, Barrett is distinctively original, and the music contained within is some of his greatest work ever. The most progressive track here is 'No Good Trying', on which Soft Machine back Barrett. Robert Wyatt remembered the chaos of trying to follow Barrett's playing, yet this unpredictability creates a great song, full of twists and turns. However, songs like 'Octopus', 'Here I Go' and 'Love You' are jaunty numbers, continuing the line established by songs like 'Bike' and 'Arnold Layne', and are 100% genius product. 'Terrapin', 'Golden Hair', 'Long Gone' and 'Late Night' are truly beautiful numbers, establishing a vivid autumnal, romantic hue, of which the second album had many similar gems. Yet, some tracks here show how fragmented Syd's mind was by this point- 'Dark Globe', 'Feel' and the harrowing 'If It's In You' showed this was a deeply distressed man, and don't make for comfortable listening. Even so, this album represents perfectly the multi-faceted personality of the brilliant Syd Barrett- one of the few people that could truly be described as a genuine genius.

    Barrett (CD 1994)
A great follow up to Syd's debut album, the self-titled "Barrett" studio album feels somewhat similiar to "The Madcap Laughs". Roger Waters does not participate on this album, but Rick Wright makes a cameo appreance on keys at times. As usual the steadfast Gilmour is by Syd's side. Whether in the production booth, on acoustic guitar or even on drums at times, Dave Gilmour does whatever it takes to make this album better. As for the music itself, don't look for anything revolutionary on this album. The music is still whimsical and slightly psychedelic, but with a more 'positive' feel, rather than the dark, dreamy feel of "Madcap". 'Baby Lemonade', 'Dominoes' and 'Gigolo Aunt' are all fun tunes with great melodies. 'Effervescing Elephant' is a short, humourous song of note that showcases Syd's playful side. My favourite tune on this album is 'It Is Obvious', a beautiful little acoustic guitar love tune that perfectly encapsulates Syd's musical, vocal and lyrical abilities. This is Syd distilled into one perfect song...
