A bit of a let down
I bought this DVD as I thought it would be a good comedy and quite relevant considering my hubby is a minister! However, it wasn't as good as we had hoped - this was not Robin Williams at his best. Apart from a few funny moments, it tended to be rather lacking in true humour. Worth a watch once, but probably wouldn't keep the movie to watch again.

Strong, heartwarming movie, but with disappointing end?
1 of 1 found this helpful Having recently seen the theatre version of this powerful story, I was keen to see if this film version did this classic justice. This portrayal does not attempt to put on affected French accents and does not contain the songs from the musical, nevertheless the performances from Liam Neeson (Valjean) and George Rush (Javert) are excellent and for the most part true to Victor Hugo's original. The amazing acts of forgiveness and how they enable someone to rise above their situation to change their life for the better, run in stark contrast to the legalistic, revengeful attitude of Javert who eventually lets his bitterness and singlemindedness get the better of him. This is where I felt slightly let down by the movie as the ending differed from the theatrical account. Without ruining it for you, I felt that this particular ending didn't live up to the heroic characteristics portrayed by Valjean, leaving him in a weaker light, when throughout, he was always so strong. Still, it is a wonderful story and very much worth watching to challenge all our beliefs about forgiveness and the good that is to be found in us all, if we but let it.
