A well-written account of the perilous actions of the WWII sub sailors.
A very comprehensive and factual book which tracks the movement of real (not fictional) young submarine sailors through WWII. From submarine school, to war patrols, to relief crews, the book draws you into the action with young men who literally become your friends. Friends that you begin to "Root" for as you continue the book. The description of actual war patrol action, submarine emergencies and attacks on their submarines are detailed and convey the courage they must have had to return patrol after patrol -- all the while the reports were coming in about losses of submarines and friends. The first four words of the title says it all. The internal battle between the submarine captains and the submarine desk jockeys over the "defective" torpedoes is detailed exceptionally. The description of the special Japanese POW treatment given to submarine POW's was enlightening. It was a page-turner which I could not put down until I finished it on the second day. I served aboard some of these submarines in the mid-50's, and I heard very few of the tales from the WWII war patrol veterans and shipmates. They just passed it off as "doing what had to be done".

A great historical 'read'.
The story is more than the submarines. It covers the company, the city, surrounding cities, the manufacturing technique, the launching method, the workers, the training, etc. My first and second submarines were two of the 28 and when I checked aboard the first in California, I was told I was assigned to one of the great boats built in Wisconsin. Now I know why they were so well-built.
They have a special event in Manitowoc the first weekend after Independence Day to celebrate their submarines. This will be their 3rd 'SubFest' and we will once again go from Texas to Manitowoc to 're-live' a little history.
