It covers
it's a protective silicone cover and since I've only owned it a few weeks I can't comment on its durability' ask me again in 5 years and I'll be able to comment.
it is stylish in that it has some decorative features; but since style is purely in the eye of the beholder, I really can't comment on how other people might consider it.
Yes, it provides good protection.

Best self belay / Shunt replacement
Far better than the Petzl Shunt (which isn't for catching a fall; it's not safe in that role), it allows down climbing without any snagging and doesn't need a heavy weight at the bottom of the rope to tension it. It doesn't have any "teeth" to damage the rope sheath or other sharp points. Perfect for exploring new routes, and can be locked manually for cleaning. Altogether a better product for ascending too; it relies on tilting to stop falls, so a quick touch with a hand locks it and aids balance in rope ascending.
Note you will benefit from using a "long" maillon rather than a carabiner to connect - it holds the plates far better and is cheaper than a screwgate, too.
