Lovely prose
I am a huge Edmund White fan and eagerly read all his books.
I also enjoy "coming-of-age" stories and this was a lovely one.
The ruminations of a young boy coming to terms with his sexuality are
offered in some really beautiful prose that is a pleasure to read.
One can assume that the child in the story is White himself (or at least
very close) and it is fascinating to see how the man developed from what the
child was. I found the book to be moving and beautiful.

A Son's Perspective
I bought the book because I had been a reader of Susan Sontag's work for a
very long time and have long been interested in her life.
She and her son were very close and I felt that his perspective on her last
days would be the most accurate. The book recounts, in a very unsentimental
way, how she fought to the end and kept hoping that she would get better.
It also deals with the son's agony over how much to tell his mother about her
condition. Sontag was a life-long seeker of truth, yet Rieff realized that
he couldn't paint too bleak a picture or she would lose hope altogether.
The book haunted me and at times was very disturbing and sad, but it is a fine
study of how one person tried to cope and, in the end, a testament to a woman
who was life-affirming to the very last breath.
