Not necessary
The same thing can be achieved with just plastic pellets and they are not as messy. The black stuff stained my clothes, hands, and sink!

1 of 1 found this helpful Works well and I have had it running for several weeks now. DO use oil for smooth operation but do NOT use anything but the plastic pellets as the "grit" stuff is really messy, except for polishing. I prefer smoothed off edges but with character and learned the hard way that the grit stains everything from my hands to the sink. I thought I needed it, but the pellets work just fine and aren't messy.
