Jackie Ormes: The First African American Woman Cartoonist
1 of 1 found this helpful My sister, a paper doll collector, told me about Jackie Ormes and I ordered this book for her I read it before sending it to her and I'm glad I did. Ormes life is a fascinating story of an incredibly talented artist. It's surprising that some of her comics got by the censors considering the years they were published. I've also read a bio about George Herriman the cartoonist who created "Krazy Kat". Born in New Orleans to a Creole family, Herriman "passed" for white for most of his adult life. Would the "Krazy Kat" comic been as successful if readers had known he was black? I doubt it.
