A factual book, The kind not popular today.
This is a scholarly text, the fruit of a lifetime of study by one of the two most knowledgeable academics alive today. Devoid of things impulsive or politically correct, the author seems to be only interested in the actual facts of history. No histrionics - no exaggerated or emotional comments calculated only to create an effect. No politicization - the selective recital of only parts of history to create a desired political viewpoint. If you want to understand the Crusades you couldn't do much better than read this text - although you should be prepared to take in a lot of detailed information.
