good dvd
Watching it again after over 20 years, it’s pretty obvious that THE NEVERENDING STORY walks a fine line between nostalgic enjoyment and crappy kids movie. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen (coming off DAS BOOT, before he became the director of TROY and POSEIDON) and based on Michael Ende’s much darker book, NEVERENDING STORY is a technically well-made film that in hindsight kinda sucks as a fantasy flick.
First, the good. Some greenscreen work aside, the film still looks fantastic (especially in Blu Ray). It was the most expensive foreign-made movie ever at the time of its release, and the money definitely shows. The production values are immense and really bring Fantasia to life in a tangible, realistic way. And given its age, Petersen relied on actual practical effects, not CGI, and the result is still thrilling. The visual effects work for the most part and the creature design is unique and creative across the board, and seeing them come to life in real space is still impressive, especially Falkor. (PS, you can still ride a life size Falkor at Bavaria Filmplatz Studios in Munich.)
Unfortunately, the story doesn’t hold up as well as the Luck Dragons. Perhaps it’s after years of LORD OF THE RINGS and HARRY POTTERS, but as a fantasy film, THE NEVERENDING STORY just feels cheesy and lame. Almost all of the elements come off as a stock “fantasy” stuff—the quests, the mythical characters, the “Nothing”—it feels like it could be transplanted to or from any other story. Even worse, specific things aout the movie that I remembered fondly, like the sinking of Artax, the terrifying showdown between Atreyu and G’Mork, and the ending flight with Bastian and Falcor in New York City, don’t seem so great now. (I blame a lot of that on how bad the kid actor playing Bastian is.)
One thing I didn’t catch from my initial viewing two decades ago was the film’s message. On one hand it’s a standard feel-good moral about believing in yourself, with the added bonus of trying to get kids to read. Unfortunately, it’s packaged in with some New-Agey BS about “nothingness” and an anti-TV/film subtext with an ironic meta call to action for the audience to stop wasting their time with movies and to open a book.
I think children will still really enjoy THE NEVERENDING STORY; it still has many of the visual and thematic stimuli that would appeal to them. But if you were a child of the 80s wanting to look back fondly with nostalgia, I warn you to adjust your expectations. Also this new Blu Ray, while having a decent transfer, is void of any special features.
