Getting rid of radio frequency (RF) noise
I had an issue with my existing LED light power supplies which were creating some serious interference not only to FM broadcasts but also to my DAB radios and, worse still, to my HF radio as I am a Ham radio enthusiast. The interference was broad band and caused issues on more than one of the amateur bands, 20m and 6m being the worst affected. I tried various things to cure this, some improved it but none worked well enough so that I could say the problem was solved.
So the solution was to replace the power supply and initially I bought two of these units to see if they were as good as they appeared to claim - EMC compliance is what caught my eye! I needed two units as my 4 LED lights consume 6 watts each and these new units are only rated at 12 watts. My previous supply was a 40 watt single unit.
I have now fitted the two units and tested them by running my HF radio which was the worst item affected and also the easiest for me to test with. The results were brilliant as the noise has reduced to such an extent I can hardly detect it on any of the amateur bands, in fact I think the noise I'm seeing is now coming from a neighbour's house!
I will now be ordering more units to replace those powering the lights in my kitchen which suffer with the same problem
