Nikon D50 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens
This camera is superb for the novice photographer, it is easy to set up and is pretty idiot proof really. The pictures are fine, for the everyday day user but you might consider changing the lens for better shots. Most people who buy DSLR tend to be more into photography and taking pictures of their favourite subjects, mine is birds and wildlife. You can spend alot more money and not get such a good camera as this.

Nikon AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G Nikkor Lens
I mainly use this lens to take pictures of birds in the wild, it enables you to get the image you want without disturbing the creatures. It is also good at taking action shots of speed boats for example. It provides good clear photographs and is reasonable priced. My current camera is a Nikon D50.

If you like crime novels, read these books not overly taxing, just time fillers. I would recommend reading them in order as it can kind of spoils a series because they refer to previous novels, but its entirely up to you. His books are getting steadily better.
