Open box purchase proved better than I had hoped for
5 of 5 found this helpful I was reluctant to purchase an "open box" computer. When it arrived, the box had been opened, but the computer was still sealed in its original packaging. It definitely was brand new. The Mrs. and I are new to the Mac world. We're both very happy with what we're seeing.

A necessary purchase for today's high tech cars unless you want to pay a dealer every time your cars computer glitches
I recently bought a used police car - a 2008 Dodge Durango. After having it for a short time, the Gas Cap warning came on, then the next day the Check Engine light appeared. A friend of mine who had a similar issue with his Durango told me what to expect, and strongly suggested that I pick up a Cen-Tech scanner. I chose the 60794 because it has ABS capabilities.
The scanner comes with a new carrying case, a book manual, a CD manual, a 9 volt battery, and the cabling necessary to connect it to your car and to your PC (USB to mini USB). I followed the instructions to the letter and updated the software and code database. Then connected it to my Durango.
I had no trouble finding the error code. The 60794 also gave a human description of the problem - the Durango's computer did a pressure test and found a very small leak. And the 60794 also gave several possible causes for the problem, including but not limited to the gas cap. I had removed and retightened the gas cap about a half dozen clicks a few days earlier, but the Check Engine warning had remained. I cleared the code. So far it hasn't returned. I'm assuming that I had the gas cap tight enough to not get the Gas Cap warning but not tight enough for the pressure test to pass.
The new semis that I drive, if a fault occurs (very frequently in bad weather - heavy rain, heavy snow or freezing rain, or extreme cold), the Check Engine light will stay on until the fault goes away. A time stamped log is kept of prior faults for later review, but if there are no active faults, the Check Engine light goes off. In my Durango, that isn't the case. Once a fault is detected, the Check Engine light stays on even if the fault is no longer active until someone hooks a computer to it and clears the code. I don't want to have to pay Dodge every time bad weather causes a false fault to occur. Having this scanner puts me in the driver's seat so I can decide if it 's a false error code, something minor that I can live with temporarily, or if I have to take the car in immediately.
I haven't used the ABS option yet. OBD II is a standardized protocol. ABS isn't. I don't know if the ABS feature will work on my Durango. I'm in no hurry to find out.
