Raising Sand - Plant & Krauss
The tall cool one teams up with the angelic voice of Alison Krauss to produce a collection of eclectic songs, both moving and beautiful on the ear. The whole atomosphere is one of effortless melody, retro styled to underplay the hugely talented muscians involved. One delight follows another, toe tapping rockabilly, sensuous balladeering, and mysterious rythyms, all tinged with a folky, country flavour. Plant and Krauss complement each other in counterpoint, call and response, and heart stopping harmonies. A trully great outing by truly great performers. Catch them on tour if you can.

Mahavisnu Orchestra Live at Montreux 74/84 DVD
John McLaughlin's seminal jazz rock ensemble The Mahavisnu Orchestra, prove yet again that great music is timeless. Although a decade apart, the two concerts here sound contemporary and relevant. The 74 concert is the post Billy Cobham / Jan Hammer 'apocolyspe' line up featuring Gale Moran on Keyboards and the mighty Jon Luc Ponty on lead Violin. The band step out of the original line ups shadow and power through numbers with stunning sensitivity for such a large ensemble. Mclaughlin displaying his trademark lightning runs against Ponty's soring violin lines. Although Pont he lacks the rock spirit of Jerry Goodman, his classical spins and inprovisational ability honed with the llikes of Frank Zappa proves to be more than a match. John McLauglin's ability to tease out the best in his musicians and his own titanic talent is evident throughout the performance and leaves the lsitener and audience absolutley spellbound.
The 1984 concert serves up a differnt dish whilst retaining the essential Mahavisnu ethhic. On offer here is an altogether funkier and polished performance, with McLaughlin giving full reign to the talents of Mitch Foreman on Keyboards, the mighty Dan Gotlieb on drums, and the amazing Bill Evans on Saxes. McLaughlin clearly enjoying trading riffs, and perpetrating mischievious changes to the plot on his young cohorts. The band typically rises to the challenge, extrapolating complex melodies and rhythms with astonishing virtuosity whilst resisiting the urge to drop into conventional 80's funk. Their ability to weave a fascinating blend of musical and cultural influences into the songs leaves you aching for more! All in all a totally exhilarating performance which deserves to be more widely seen and heard.
