Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS
1 of 1 found this helpful I've bought lots of second-hand photo gear off Ebay, and so far have yet to be dissappointed. The 100-400 was the most expensive, so I was nervous. If you are planning to buy this lens you've probably already done your research on FM reviews, Photozone, The Digital Picture etc., so I won't go over that stuff. One thing I do think might be a bit of a myth is the stories of lots of soft copies of this lens. Let's face it, it is only f/5.6 at 400mm, so it's not that fast, and the IS is 1st gen so only 1-2 stops. That easily makes for shots with a bit of blur - hence the stories of softness perhaps? To get the sharpest pics hand-held you'll need f/8-11 and at least 1/800s, but it can give good results wide open and 1/200s. The push-pull zoom is fine - a one-touch (twist) type would mean a permanently long lens, so I like it as it is.
If you are buying second hand, just check withthe seller that the zoom is smooth all the way out to 400mm. Well used ones can wear and the zoom can jam apparently.

Quality bit of Kit!
Really solid tap wrench with a proper square drive (not just a chuck style that only grips the round part of the tap).
