Classic 60s thriller with Steve McQueen. The one with the great car chase.
This film is a classic 60s thriller starring the late, great Steve McQueen - and boasting (in my opinion anyway) the best car chase ever shot and put on film, on location on the streets of San Francisco. English director Peter Yates ( whose first American film outing this was ) got to sit in the directors chair on this picture at the express invitation of McQueen. This was McQueen's company's, Solar, first salvo into film production. The 2 x disc DVD, has a bunch of extra goodies, the best of which is a voice over commentary track by Peter Yates himself. The film has great photography by Bill Fraker,( the DP on this pic.) and a marvelous jazz score by Lalo Schifrin.( He of Mission Impossible fame ) The film is unusual in that nearly all the interior location shots are not film sets, but actual interiors, so that when a hotel room interior is shown it is actually a hotel room, when a hospital interior, it is actually the interior of a hospital. This gives the film a realism that few other pictures have. McQueen did about 90% of his own driving ( It never would be allowed with Health & Safety today!) The editing on this movie earned the film a best Editing Academy Award, due in a large part to the car chase scenes. The chase itself is not without errors. When you watch it next, look out for a green Voltswagen that McQueen's Ford Mustang passes on more than one occasion bouncing up and down the San Francisco hills. The only thing that ( for me anyway ) could improve this film is that it is not shot in a 'scope' letter boxed aspect ratio of 2.35x1 - but is filmed in standard 'wides-screen' of 1.85x1. Otherwise it is pretty close to being a masterpiece. Oh and look out for a small part played by a cab driver in that film, it is none other than Robert Duval. Five stars *****.
The Sherlock Holmes Collection Box Set [DVD], Good DVD, Peter Cushing,

Good Peter Cushing 60's tv Sherlock Holmes series box set.
I watched this old TV series back in the 1960s. In those days I watched them in black and white. Nice to see them in colour finally. But a shame such few episodes still survive in the archives. Perhaos the production values are not quite up to the 1980s Jeremy Brett episodes, but for its time in the late 60s, this was high end quality drama.
