April & I - a dream-like musical experience
'April & I' by Paul Steel is a superb dream-like Wilsonesque musical experience that had me enchanted throughout. It is 28 mins of beautifully interwoven music,lyrics and arrangements which takes you on a child's journey through the joys and pitfalls of growing up in a sometimes lonely and unfriendly world. It reminds me of Brian Wilson's 'Smile' meets Keith West's 'Excerpt from a Teenage Opera'. If 'Smile' was Wilson's Teenage Symphony to God then 'April & I' is Paul Steel's Symphony to childhood,loneliness and growing up. Is it as good as 'Smile'? Maybe not quite, but if they were both entered into the Music Derby they would be running neck and neck, heading for a photo finish. Yes it's that good.
