Excellent field palette; poor student grade paints
The kit is compact with more than the normal paint mixing area. It's become a very popular design. The paints are poor, drying chalky in appearance duo to high filler content. These are not paints to use with a small field brush; washes and fills dry streaked and uneven, again due to excessive filler. The paints are molded into the individual pockets in a thin plastic liner. I pried mine out, carefully pried and removed each dry paint block, and reshaped the thin plastic, being careful not to puncture or tear it. Once all were removed, I refilled the pockets with artist quality paint from tubes. NOW this makes an excellent field kit.
One note: with all new plastic palettes, the shiny mixing area surfaces cause pigment mix to bead up and scatter, making the color mix process difficult. Use a small patch of scouting pad and a thin past of scouring powder to scrub the bottoms of each mixing area. This replaces the shiny water-repellent plastic surface with a water-hugging matte finish, much better for color mixing and blending. Also it's a good way to remove pigment stains, later.

Excellent unit; dependable service
Very capable unit. A shame Magellan stopped making them. Mine has functioned flawlessly for several years in an outside holder on my sailboat bulkhead, navigating in the San Juan islands and up the British Columbia coast. Rain and splashed water doesn't harm it. The accessory data & power cable is a 'must' for extended use. These older Magellan units are a great bargain.

Nicely made; slender, feels good in the hand
2 of 2 found this helpful I'm an elderly student learning old-time fiddle music. This bow is very nice, well balanced and a joy to hold. I pair it with a heavier Glassner bow and find that between the two, I'm getting a nice range of experience in developing a good-sounding bowing technique. I find that this lighter bow requires a little more bearing down for a solid note, but it also has a lovely ability for deft, light touches in slurring grace notes. I very much recommend this bow.
