I love this album, but only buy if you are a fan ... else try Tug of War.
Tug of War was a difficult act to follow, and Pipes of Peace is a good companion album if a little hit and miss. The opening track "Pipes of Peace" is followed by the dance number "Say Say Say". After that it gets a little twee with songs like "The Other Me" and "Keep Under Cover". However, he redeems "Side A" with the beautiful ballad "So Bad".
"The Man" a duet with Jackson and "Sweetest Little Show" are strong tracks, but once again Macca descends into his childhood with "Average Person" which whilst entertaining can be a little lightweight. "Hey Hey" and "Tug of Peace" are interesting instrumental tracks, but they feel like filler tracks.
However, once again, he redeems himself with "Through Our Love" which surely must be a candidate for the Guiness book of Records as the verse stretches to a phrase nearly 2 minutes long without having to repeat any musical motifs. This is McCartney showing that he can, when he puts his mind to it, be classed in the same category as a Lloyd Webber ... or dare I say it a modern day Mozart.
If you are a fan, you will love this album. If you are not, then I would advise you to try some of his other work first (e.g. Tug of War and Flowers in the Dirt).

You will come back to this album again and again.
1 of 1 found this helpful Tug of War is often regarded as Paul McCartney's best solo effort after Wings. The opening track "Tug of War" sets the scene with its orchestral grandeur. The rest of the album does not disappoint with its mixture of upbeat tracks (e.g. the dance track "What's that you're doing") and thoughtful (e.g. his poignant tribute to John Lennon in "Here Today"). "Wanderlust" is a favourite as well.
I love this album, and I'm sure you will do to.
