Great overview of the early history of the ballad.

Absolutely brilliant book. I'm on my second read annotating as I go along. It gives a great overview of the early history of the ballad form with all the best examples. I know a lot about the later ballads but this book ideally fills a gap in my knowledge without going in too deep.
