Excellent but be wary if you use a USB Hub
1 of 1 found this helpful I am rather careful with new USB devices and so I initially plugged the Webcam into a USB3 powered hub which has short circuit protection on all its ports - much better for that to take the strain than to risk blowing my PC Motherboard with a faulty unknown device. But results were terrible under Linux Mint 19 and almost no better booted into Windows 8.1 native or a Windows 10 virtual machine. The Frame Rates were very poor and there was severe picture breakup with horizontal lines - totally unusable. The USB lead on the Webcam is on the short side and wouldn't easily stretch to my PC case's front USB2 sockets from where I'd positioned the Webcam. I gave up for the day planning to write the £5.99 off to experience - you get what you pay for.
Except - sometimes you don't. The next morning I decided to reposition my set up so that the Webcam could plug straight into the PC ports. The transformation was nothing short of amazing and the device worked really well under Linux. A friend set up a Zoom meeting and reported he was getting perfect 1280x720 video and clear sound from the microphone. The image is quite wide and I didn't detect any noticeable edge distortion. It does get a little grainy in very low light but that's to be expected.
So I'm very satisfied and can certainly recommend it. The Linux Kernel (4.15 series) loaded the Webcam driver completely silently - truly plug and play. I didn't revisit using it under Windows as I don't normally use that OS.
Perhaps a professional would demand more but I think you would have to pay a great deal more to get a significant improvement on this. Certainly for casual use it's perfect.
