Behind the Scenes by Elizabeth Keckley (9781515041023)

    Behind the Seams
I came across Elizabeth Keckley whilst researching Mary Lincoln on-line for an audition. I became fascinated with this previously unheard of woman and why she is not the subject of huge movies, I do not know as she was incredible and remains relevant today. She was vilified upon the publication of this memoir yet, without it, we would not have learned the complexities of Mary Lincoln and all she went through, so I am hugely grateful to her. It is entitled Behind the Scenes: Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House yet it equally could be called Behind the Seams as in so many ways, her integrity, compassion and grounded personality held the goings on in the White House together. It speaks volumes that she only touches on her abuse as a slave girl and with detachment, but what wholly stands out is the fact that she intrinsically knew from a young age that it was not okay to be enslaved; beaten or treated with contempt and inequality because of the colour of her skin. It is this very clarity and determination that led her to financially support an entire plantation before buying her own freedom and becoming dressmaker to affluent ladies in high society, including the First Lady. She would be a star in her own right today. She has so much to teach us even now and we could all use her as an example of speaking up for what is right in the world and emphasising that to be put down for being different or for anyone to think that they are superior to another being is wrong. The only reason I am giving this book 4 stars is because an editor would be appreciated. It was written long ago, of course, but an edit would fine tune the details so that they could be in a clearer layout and information is not repeated. Page numbers would also be good, especially because I was using it as a tool of reference (I got the part) and this would make it easier. However, if you like stories about real people; are interested in history; Abraham and Mary Lincoln; the White House during that era; the American Civil War; an honest look at what happened to several former slaves, then buy this book. It is rich in detail and wholly unromantic and Elizabeth Keckley deserves to be held up as a fine example of a courageous, powerful woman of conviction and self belief. We could do with a few of her in political power now. Her telling of Willie Lincoln’s death was paramount in helping me play that scene in the upcoming television documentary and is utterly heartbreaking. It really brought it home to me how much the Lincolns ~ and Mary in particular ~ went through. Elizabeth Keckley did the world a huge service by being so honest and detailed in the sharing of her times ‘behind the scenes’. I feel it important that she becomes known and appreciated; therefore highly recommend that you buy this book. Thank you.

    Sparkly and Soft
I bought these for my bee-loving daughter's birthday. The bee looked sparkly in the photo and when they arrived, I was delighted with the quality and sparkle. My daughter was thrilled and the matching cushions are nice and plump. She put them straight in and on her bed. It has inspired her to keep her bed tidy now 💛

    What 80s record?
This is as fresh and contemporary today as it was originally. I have loved playing this album over and over again just like I used to. A classic with touches of ingenuity and a mass of originality, Terence Trent D'Arby's vocal beauty is as gorgeous as his face.
