Profound disquisitions masquerading as a 'diary'.

This was the first of WG's diary volumes I'd read. Took me a while to adjust to the form. It's not really a 'diary', it's a series of articulate discussions relating to things that happen to him, usually related to his work as a writer, his position as an exile. Once you get used to that, it's down to whether you find this sort of material interesting. For the most part I do, especially when he talks about Sartre, Genet, what it's like being back in Berlin in 1964. Some passages I skim a little as the subject matter is not of interest. This is different to how I'd read a novel where I'd take care to read the whole thing if I'm going to read it at all. WG's insights are often profound and go against the tide of bourgeois views, which is why I give it five stars.
