The curate's egg
This was very good at the start but then it sort of petered out.
The protagonist-the oddlly named Mountstuart , somtimes seems to have a heart of stone. It is unfathomable why so many great artisitic figures are drawn to him.

The good old times
A brilliant piece of slightly autobiographical fiction-as always-by master writer David Lodge.Drawing from his own experience of mandatory National Military Service in the 1950s he deftly weaves a comedy with themes of friendship, forbidden love, trust and sheer army lunacy all told with great drama.
You somehow feel the truth of it.I could not stop reading..
Unforgettable.
