Perhaps a little dated and obscure but would be difficult to think of a more appropriate title
Jane Yolen has an enviable reputation and it's easy to see why. The Devil's Arithmetic is one of her earliest works and it's based on life in a German concentration camp in WW2
Extremely readable, it contains many of the horrors which occurred together with both the love and selfishness of the prisoners. The only book I can compare it with id The Book Thief
Very highly recommended as a wonderful example of both humanity and inhumanity

Title may have some meaning for a minority of adult readers but will be meaningless to chidren
Jane Yolen is a wonderful writer. This, I think, is intended to be a children's book, but she has the ability to make it appeal to adult audiences so, thanks to her skill, it's universal.
So, recommended for all ages
