Tremendous
Tremendous. Shakespeare for your living room audio-visual.
Highly abridged from original texts, but delivers beautifully balanced and nuanced performances. In particular, there is a fantastic use of silence - pauses - as the characters think how to respond.. this is vastly better than the rat-tat-tat forced into the stage setting, which is wearisome and artificial. Had WS had the choice, I think he would have preferred to write for screen, if he could make his characters do as these do - and display such natural degrees of attention and distraction.
I have rewatched all of them, many times. How many films invite that level of scrutiny? Tarkovsky. We have really, in Shakespeare, the very best historical films to be found in the history of the world - correction - historical fictions..
