Elite 4x dsi: A good investment for both summer and winter fishing

I bought this unit to use both for icefishing and boat fishing. So, far I've only used it four times on the ice, and it seems to perform quite nicely although it took some fiddling to get it tweeked and zeroed in. It is important to read the operators manual immediately because it cleared up issues before they posed a problem. Because this unit is mainly mean't for boat use it comes only with the boat "skimmer" transducer. Unlike the icefishing dedicated "Ice Machine" this unit does not have the "flasher" option(which I don't care for anyway!). I prefer to see the actual fish traces near the bottom which this unit can perform flawlessly. To zoom on the bottom you need to set the range to "custom", then set the lower limit (say 40 feet--a foot or two lower then the bottom) and the upper limit at 33 feet. This setting allows me to see the water column directly under me from 39 feet (directly off the bottom ) to 33 feet, so it basically zooms in on that seven foot section of water. The transducer takes some fiddling to get it aimed correctly. I've found that it's best to put it directly between the fishing holes (which are 3 to 4 feet apart) to pick up both lures in the sonar cone. I have watched fish traces come up from the bottom to whack my lure. For all practical purposes the images appears to be in "real time". I do intend to buy the ice transducer which should cut down on the amount of time I spend aiming the boat transducer.
