Late-Victorian classic
This rendition is a welcome update as the older versions, marvellous as they may be, did not present the background of Victorian high society -- financial and landed wealth, the futility of the pursuit of a "name", the shallow romanticism of the rich and idle. This version of the play goes beyond the physical stage to present actual Victorian-era mansions, with all the attendant procession of servants and maids that made life possible for the happy few. It even introduces funny running references to the main character's (Algernon's) insolvency (which is only hinted at in the play, but was quite clear for audiences at the time). In spite of introducing a few very useful hints for the modern viewer, this version does not go overboard and turn Oscar Wilde's delicate masterpiece into a vulgar modern slapstick. The acting is also first-rate, the quality of the filming excellent, and the DVD itself well-produced. I've bought it to show it to a class, so the subtitles help as well.
