A SUPERB BOOK THAT BRINGS THE HORRORS OF THE EASTERN FRONT TO THE READER
Robert Kershaw has done a magnificent task in compiling this book for the amateur and professional historian alike. His approach has been to put it in a context and format that is both easy to read and easy to follow particulary if one is new this vast subject.
It must be born in mind that this campaign was (and perhaps is) unsurpassed in its ferocity and length (from its outset in June 1941 which this book primarily covers) to its bitter end in the rubble of Berlin in May 1945, so therefore the content is certainly not for the faint hearted (and as the time old saying "a picture paints a thousand words" graphically portray in a way that matches the text.
Another point is that many of the pictures have come from sources that have not been published before (I certainly had not seen them after many years of reading and collecting World War 2 military books)and Kershaw has gone to great lengths to include these in a way that matches the text as you read it with the captions below them "quoted from the text".
This book gives a new outlook to the reader from "the man/woman on the ground" or "in the thick of it" perspective. It has the tension, the horror, the compassion and even at times the soldiers "black humour" showing through the pages from the men that wrote these letters home to their loved ones and friends in their idealic homes in Germany and the Reich.
I would strongly and highly recommend this book to any student of war as its contents give way to the human factor that men/ women experience within all wars and conflicts and also brings to bear the influence of what a human can (and could do again) to another.
