Dark, atmospheric crime drama that tackles grief and mental illness through dark humour and empathy.

This is an engaging British series starring the always awesome Stellan Skarsgard as the eponymous River. As well as being a crime drama, it delves into loss and mental illness. It looks at manifestations of different parts of the protagonists psyche as he deals with past trauma while trying to solve a recent murder. Past friendships and boundaries are tested but ultimately the last episode finishes with issues resolved and a strangely upbeat happy ending that will make you cry and chuckle in equal measures. Its worth sticking to its conclusion to see things turn out well for a lead you've been routing for and a lovely flash of that Skarsgard smile. For a series with such dark themes, it is littered with equally dark humour. Like River all the supporting characters are complex and come with their own set of flaws. It is ultimately a story about being human with all its fragility. Don't expect an easy, breezy watch but if you like deep, character driven crime shows then this is one for you.
