Sherman's March: Atlanta to the Sea - Time Life Civil War Series
14 Oct, 2020
Sherman’s March was Frightening Real... as told in real time
Engaging and concise read on one of history’s most celebrated and reviled generals and effective military campaigns. Profusely illustrated with maps and ordinary tales of soldiers and events that offer a coherent framework to this complex, tragic, and sobering time in America’s history. General William Tecumseh Sherman is undoubtedly one the War’s most brilliant - if not the most complex - commanders who nonetheless had multiple character flaws. Commanding an army of some 60,000 hardscrabble veterans, news of “Sherman is coming” in what became known as “Total War” was enough to strike fear to all in the army’s supposed or real path. (Sherman cut all communications upon leaving Atlanta effectively eliminating news of where he was really heading.). The book is obviously meant to engage and educate in an accelerated and pictorial way that can further motivate more extensive study and reading. Drawing upon excellent although not all available resources, this book nonetheless is a fine read - one can finish within two days or less - and offers a nice reference book to draw upon at later dates. Well produced and handsome, the book will be a nice addition to any Civil War library.
