The Amazing Spiderman vs Kingpin (Sega CD) Complete, Clean & Minty
03 Jul, 2022
A fun experience with charming animations and catchy 90's rock music
Best version of the game you can get by far. Features awesome music by Spencer Nilsen in collaboration with Mr. Big (Eric Lee Martin). It is a neat oddity and what differentiates it from the Genesis version is the game's story is brought to life through animated cutscenes that are somewhat crude by today's standards but still quite charming. When Spidey dies, each game-over screen can be different depending on how you were taken out. This pre-dates the Spider-Man animated series in the 90's. It also has voice acting which can be a bit hilarious as the voice actor tries very hard to sound heroic, but oversells it a bit to the point where it borders on parody. In terms of gameplay, you are able to explore the entire city of New York and pick and choose where you go next, in order to acquire more health and webbing for your spider-slinging. There are special train levels and fun boss battles. You battle with cops and civilians trying to (hilariously) stop you, as well as robots and the usual Spider-Man villain gallery such as Venom and Doctor Octopus. Although I think the Spider-Man genesis game that came out in 1995 (based on the animated series) is definitely the superior game overall, this one is worth a look if you are a fan of Spider-Man, and either missed this title back in its' hey-day or are a fan of retro-gaming overall. For its time, it has some ambitious gameplay for sure, with web-slinging, climbing of buildings, walls, and side-scrolling beat'em up action. In terms of its' collectibility, definitely snag it as soon as you can, especially if you are a collector of Sega CD titles as these are only going to become harder and harder to find.
