BMW AIRHEAD IS A FARTHING RIDING IN TOWN
6 of 6 found this helpful The 82 BMW R65 is my third bike after a 1982 Honda Goldwing and 2000 Harley Roadking. It is just simply a much easier bike in town. It is easy to manuva, with enough horse power (45HP), solid feeling on acceleration, clean gear shifting, and firm brake. The rear shock pre-load is easily adjusted for solo or two-up. It starts up easy but needs to take some time to warm up. It is fed through carburator, not fuel injected. The engine is simply quiet and smooth.
The fuel economy is very good. There is no fuel gauge on this bike but you can use the milage to estimate the time to refill. I fill a tank a gas and ride from Pasadena, CA to San Diego, CA and have an MPG of 51. For in town, it's about 37-42MPG as I experienced.
The storing capacities is amazing too. There are two storage trays under the seat. One for the glove and the other one for the tools. I usually keep my wallet, cellphone, keys in the tool trays and with some more space left. The saddlebags are also big enough to keep all my books, notes, safety vest (I am an engineer in trade), digital camera, laptop, field tools, and office pants/shirts with a pair of shoes for replacement.
Since it's a old bike, there is always something here and there needs to take care of. However, BMW designed this bike to be easily maintained by the rider. I change the engine oil and filter, shaft oil, transmission oil, spark plugs, fork oil, fuel lines, battery and few light bulbs. All are easily accessed with some mechanical hands-on experience.
However, there are still something falls short . It is not designed to run on freeway (65mph+) which is not stable and have a feeling of "floating". The alternator is not good enough to charge the battery enough during short, low RMP rides (I charge the battery with charger once a week), tires are too narrow compare to today's street bikes and the idle is not easy to change (you need to adjust both carbs).
For additional things to buy with this bike, as many available on Ebay, are maintainence manual, spark plugs and wires, control cables and wires, starter and alternate, original BMW tools, shock springs and shock absorbers. These will help bring the bike to its design condition and improve its performance.
Overall, I like this little ride and it does bring me a lot of fun in riding. I like to ride it Saturday morning on the street since there is not much traffic. I do not ride fast (30-40MPH) and enjoy wind breeze through. I think this is the best way to enjoy this bike.

A Heavy and Powerful Pair
This pair is a powerful puller! Each of those have motor inside with their brains synchronized. Basically you get a consisted locos. Used it to pull a 50 freight cars on my layout and it’s like a breeze. The sound has better clarity and distinct difference of the sounds in the mix comparing to my Digitrax decoder. A nice pair any EMD F3/F7 fan should not miss.
