Aigo A208 (512 MB) MP3 Player
Unusually elegant appearance and button layout for a device of this type. As so often, the user interface lets this down a bit through irritating bugs eg erratic keypress detection and menu level transitions but these can all be worked around and lived with. The earphone jack on my player can easily end up 0.5mm out of the socket and that's enough to produce weird results in the earphones. Overall, though it's a good buy at under £10 in 2010.

LOUD BEEPER EXCELLENT BUT USER INTERACTION POOR
The only kitchen timer I've encountered with a loud enough beeper. It cannot count seconds. It's a great shame that it makes no sound when it is started - making one peer awkwardly at the small display to see whether the colon is flashing, to confirm it is running. It emits a couple of beeps 10min and 5min before timeout - possibly helpful for a few situations but rendering it useless for timing a short nap.

MUST TRY HARDER
None of the pneumatic time-switches types I have used, including this one, offer modern standards of reliability but older wiring arrangements still often require us to use them.. Their time-out period is awkward to adjust and not very stable thereafter. Like others, this model is sensitive to the degree of tightness of its attachment screws - this could have been largely avoided by careful mechanical design. On balance, I think this switch type is of slightly more pleasing design and has performed a bit better than others in a block of 16 flats which I maintain.
