    All About Glass 14-1: Bohemian Welz-Victorian Castors-Dearborn-US Glass-Henke

    All About Glass
What a delight to receive and read this issue. I specifically bought it from overseas for the Welz article, but was delighted by the standard of editorship and authorship through the entire content. Castor sets and Martin Massman in particular were news to me as a britisher. In Craig Orkney's 10 page article, with 45 figures, 32 of them of the glass itself, he has come as close to as producing a catalogue raisonne as anyone ever has - in our "glass bibles" Welz warranted only a few pages until now. Craig really has made a difference in his reasoned and empirical approach to this little known period in Czech/Bohemian glass production - helped by assiduous research leading to original documentation from sources with family ties. As a pattern to follow, Craig's article could set the bar for research into other Czech/Bohemian glass houses of the period, which number in the high 10s. The access to original material in the Czech Republic or elsewhere will be paramount. Of interest, in the 1952 book "Hut'Mistr Ruckl" by Jaroslav Vavra, published in Prague in 1952, one of the Welz family (probably Franz Alois) is described as "old veteran" although, whether war- or glass-veteran (or both) is lost to me as my Czech isn't up to it. Interestingly, in Craig's article, Franz Alois appears in the uniform of an army officer, Discernment and elucidation of pre-war Czech glassmakers' affiliations and culture/religion/ethnicity and post-war regard may help to understand a still difficult period in European history: some factory owners and makers were Jewish, some were German or settled in Germany, some (like Welz) were not "disappeared" from the histories - at least as of 1952. More may follow on this story as well. With more to come, a fascinating taster and a lesson to the hundreds of sellers who don't recognise this work on Ebay as I write.

    Beauty. Not "easy-listening". Engaging.
