The original was the best.
I have a background in HCI (Human/Computer Interfacing) so was interested when Vodaphone/Sagem first announced the VS1 - apparently a simple, friendly, mobile aimed at the older generation who needed an easy to understand phone, and one that was physically easy to operate. For reasons that are irrelevant here I didn't buy one, but some time later bought the "improved" VS3 which claimed much the same. Although only middle aged and used to using graphical interfaces, I found the VS3 awkward to use: The buttons, although large by comparison with other phones, are not easy to operate with cold hands - I'm a motorcyclist so this is a common occurrence! I resorted to growing a nail especially to operate the keys but there were still problems This winter I resolved to get a different phone and discovered that the old VS1s were sometimes available on ebay - although avidly sought after by some who were prepared to pay well over the original asking price - and repeated purchases too ( ???!!!). Now that I have an old, used VS1 I am able to comment very favourably upon it - the buttons, though slightly smaller than those of the VS3 are well spaced so one can use the whole of a finger or thumb pad to operate just the one key, the figure 8 shape means that you can hold it firmly and the weight is re-assuring to hold. The case doesn't seem to be quite as precisely made as the VS3. The speaker phone facility is far, far better than the VS3 - I suspect the larger size and case shape allowed for a better speaker and acoustic design than the later model's slim line format. With both the VS1 and VS3 there is much more functionality than is hinted at in the manuals should it be needed - full predictive text and Local Area info for instance. The original manuals are no longer available to download from the main vodaphone website, but I found a copy here: http://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/device-support/vodafone/simply-vs1-curvy/vf_simply_vs1_curvy_userguide.pdf or otherwise http://tinyurl.com/3dhmox Get one while you can if you want a simple phone that can be used with arthritic or cold fingers!

Fiskars Scissors Sharpener Tuner SewSharp Scissors Restorer Precise Cutting
16 Dec, 2019
Must have accessory for maintaining quality Fiskars needlework scissors.
I make knives. I sharpen woodworking chisels to scary degrees of sharpness. When my partner said her Fiskars #5 needed attention (after some abuse it must be admitted) I thought it would be an easy matter to restore the cutting action for needlework use. I looked at the edges under a high-power lens and became very cautious. The "shear angle" on the Fiskars is not the same as "normal scissors", and my jigs would not be suitable. I looked around the web/youtube and found that several people had had very good results with these, and probably more had had difficulties. This sharpener is so cheap compared with the cost of #5 scissors I thought I would order one up, and try it out - I could see why people might have difficulty, and if it didn't work, I would have, at least, a use for the small ceramic rod. Technically, using the terminology I'm familiar with, this is a "hone" - rather than a sharpener. One is reforming the edge, rather than removing metal along the bevel edge. The ceramic rod is set at exactly the right angle for the Fiskars needlework scissors. I put some very high quality surgical scissors in the device, and you could see that the fine edge of the blades would not be touched until a lot of metal had been removed. The inner surface of the scissor blades MUST be in firm contact with the face of the plastic guide. You MUST NOT allow them to twist as you slide the scissors through the device. You get more control if you start at the tip and push the scissors through, allowing the blades to open as the ceramic rod moves towards the scissor hinge. The diagram on the packaging is very poor - if I didn't know about edge profiles I would have totally ruined the scissors. But, despite all my experience of hand-sharpening blades of many kinds, the results from this little gadget are phenomenal. You can cut a wisp of thread as it falls through the air, there is the satisfying sound of blades meeting correctly. If you've spent £15+++ on a pair of Fiskars small needlework scissors, then get one of these to maintain them. Do not expect good results with scissors that do not share the acute bevel angle that Fiskars use.

Picture Frame Hanging D Ring Double Np Nickel Plated & Screws Pack Of 10
09 Jan, 2019
Hanging … It concentrates the mind wonderfully. Samuel Johnson
I'm confident that these hangers are suitable for hanging some valuable pictures securely. Well worth buying more than you need for a particular job so that you have some on hand. The hanger: Well plated, both sides of the stamping, AND on the edges. There is plenty of metal around the screw holes, and I think one could safely use these hangers with a single screw if the frame was not wide enough to angle the hanger appropriately and the frame was not of a weight that required 2 screws per side. The ends of the ring are NOT welded, but the wire from which it is formed is stout enough (2.5 mm) to resist opening when supporting frames of appropriate weight. The wire is also plated, but not at the ends. The ring is well formed, with a good curve to allow wire or cord to slide around to the correct angle towards the hanging point(s). The screws: Plated, with a sharp point. The edges of the thread are not sharp, and will certainly require a pilot hole in hardwood frames. The head is marked as if it is a "pozi" screw, but the cross-head recess is neither Phillips, nor Pozidrive. Take care to find a screwdriver/bit that fits well. I would not want to refix these many times - measure twice, drill a 1mm pilot, screw carefully. Take care if the frame is less than 12mm thick. The screw-points may come through the frame to the viewer's side. Washers, or different screws, might be necessary. Measure. Measure again.
