Cadfael - the complete collection
if there was a series which sums up what medieval life in England was really like, this serialisation of the Ellis Peters books, which stars the superb Sir Derek Jacobi, is it. The life of the medieval abbey of Shrewsbury, its monks and their relationship with the world outside is a microcosm of what was happening all over the country. It is a "must watch" for anyone interested in the period.

One of the few prayerbooks you'll need
As Chaplain of Downside School David Foster writes with both authority and experience. The book provides all the basics: the standard prayers; prayers for the Mass and Reconciliation; the Rosary and the Church Year. But he does more than this. Rather than a narrow, prescriptive "list of prayers" he provides background information on how best to prepare yourself to pray and how to integrate prayer into your daily life. He also provides a variety of prayers to choose from for various occasions. These are not all traditionally Catholic. There are prayers from the Book of Common Prayer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and others. I would recommend this to beginners or those coming back who want a framework which can be fine tuned by individuals.

Wonderful illustrated children's and young people's book.
You have to know something of India to really appreciate it, but that's not hard. The diminishing Anglo-Indian community are quite remarkable and have made their mark in India, the Commonwealth and the World. The book is part of a series for Indian young people about lesser known communities. The author succeeds well. Her illustrations are beautiful.
