A sad finish...
I love Gordon Lightfoot. I think he was the best storyteller of songs - ever. When I listen to his music, I feel like I'm a pioneer riding a horse through some country side in North America or a captain charting directions on some ship at sea. However, on this 1998 "A Painter Passing Through" CD - its just hard to listen to because Gordon has clearly lost his voice. Maybe the many years of hard drinking and cigarettes have taken their toll or maybe he's had some physical problems that has caused this - but, the "robust" voice is now gone. Although I like the songs and their arrangements, I just can't get beyond the "Katherine Hepburn" shaky voice. The odd thing is that typically the reverse happens to singers (Neil Diamond, Stephen Stills, John Mellencamp, etc.)where the voice "lowers" with age. Anyway, I'll always love Gordon Lightfoot and I thank him from a distance for his wonderful music, but I'm afraid that this CD will just remain on my shelf.

A pleasant enough musical treat.
Even though I read and try to keep up with "All Things Texas Music", I admit that I didn't know a thing about Terri Hendrix except for recognizing her name. Then, I heard one of her songs, I believe, on TCU's 88.7 FM radio station one day and thought that I should pick up one of her CD's and check out her scene. WOW...What a good choice I made in purchasing "The Art of Removing Wallpaper". It's just a nice stroll down the folk/storytelling/not-to-serious musical lane. Very enjoyable throughout! Also, she gets a big helping hand from Natalie Maine's dad (Lloyd) to bring out the best in production.

White soul - Blues feel!
Well, way back in my high school days, the inside music-heads of Detroit all seemed to have this album in their collection. It was one of those "crossover" musical styles that satisfied the blues, rock and soul genres. You know what I'm referring to, like when you went over to that one guy's upstairs flat and he was drinking Heineken instead of Miller High Life and listening to Jethro Tull instead of Black Sabbath. For those insiders, "Greetings From L.A." was a staple. Tim Buckley's stretching vocals on this album seemed to suggest that he previously spent months listening to Al Green and Marvin Gaye before venturing into the studio to record what is probably his best work ever. So, it doesn't matter if you're the 50-something surburban white guy or the hipster contemporary college kid - if you have this one spinning on your communist RED China made CD player, someone visiting at your place will certainly say, "Dude, who is this guy?"
