Watch the director's cut, you'll thank me later
I'll never understand why this movie bombed at the box office; despite its flaws, The Wolfman is easily the best werewolf movie since An American Werewolf in London in 1981 with its atmospheric score, stunning cinematography, creature effects delivered by the god of movie monsters, Rick Baker, superb performances by Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt, and you can't go wrong with a Victorian England setting. The theatrical cut does suffer from pacing problems due to sloppy editing and plotholes character-wise, but the director's cut luckily solves most of that although it is gorier, hence its unrated status. While there is no comparing to the original 1941 version, this version has a special place in my heart, it recalls the spirit of the classic Univeral Monster movies with a dash of the macabre flair from Hammer Horror films, all while remaining its own beast and using modern technology to its advantage (even if it fell short on the transformations, but had its production run as scheduled we probably would have been treated to practical effects as opposed to CGI).
This is the film that should have jumpstarted the rebooted Universal Monsters franchise, not Dracula Untold or the 2017 remake of The Mummy.
