52329 Brand New Draper Clutch Mate Universal Alignment Tool
    21 Jun, 2016
Couldn't get it to do anything useful
I bought this in hopes of making life easier when changing the clutch on my Celica 190. Prior to using this tool I assembled it together with the collet piece that would fit through my clutch disc spline. First of all the threads on the brass nut were not tapped correctly and were too stiff for the tapered end to grab and start splaying out the collet. So straight away I had to run a tap down the nut in order to get it moving freely on the threads. After this I start work on my car and eventually get to the clutch. I attempted to use this tool but could not find a way of it reliably holding the clutch disc centrally in place while I torqued the bolts up. There was still plenty of movement on the clutch disc as I was torquing the pressure plate down. After one attempt at keeping everything straight with the tool the clutch disc was clearly not aligned straight. In the end I simply aligned the clutch by eye alone as I didn't want to risk trusting the alignment tool given how much of a pain the gearbox can be to get back on. After aligning it by eye there was no issue in getting the Gearbox back on. The shaft went in nicely and the bell-housing bolted back on. So in my experience so far this tool is poorly made as well as bad at its intended purpose and simple eyesight alignment prevailed in my case. If I were to do a clutch in future I would strongly consider getting the specific alignment tool for the car or if you are feeling confident do it by eye.
