Great book, beautifully written, strong characters, moving stories, Buy it!
This is a beautifully written book about how an extraordinary family survived ugly times through ingenuity, hard work and love. Author Da Chen writes of his life as the grandson of a hated land owner in Chairman Mao's China during the Cultural Revolution. He and his siblings were forbidden to attend middle school or high school. His brothers and sisters were sent at a young age to work long hours in the field. His father was frequently arrested, sent to work camps, and his grandfather was paraded through town and publicly beaten. Da takes refuge in a small gang that makes its money through gambling and other questionable activities, smoking, stealing, clowning around, to create a life amid so much that is forbidden and unattainable. After Mao's death, however, China wanted smart citizens, and even those from "questionable" political backgrounds were allowed to take the entrance exam for college. Da works ferociously hard, as does his brother, aided by his family and the people whom his father has befriended. The writing is lyrical, the stories both poignant and funny, and the book can change your heart. I heartily recommend the book. There is a YA version called "China's Son" which would be good for middle and high school readers. Or give the people in high school whom you love "Colors of the Mountain". It will change how they see education and family.
