Vegetarian Suppers - Compact Sainsbury's cookbook that is indispensable.
I bought this book in-store some 35 years ago, and many others in the series. I'm so glad they can still be found. The recipes in all these Sainsbury books are straightforward and succinctly presented, workable, the ingredients readily available (with substitutes sometimes also suggested) and generally great. The authors are well chosen and know their onions. I recommend particularly the French and Italian books, and Patricia Lousada's two books, American Sampler and Pasta Italian Style. Also Roz Denny's Rice, Beans & Pasta (see her excellent tamale pie for one of the best and simplest interpretations of this staff-of-life dish).
Vegetarian Suppers in particular has several indispensable recipes that have seen so much action that I needed to get a new copy, as the relevant pages were in a bit of a state. Then, having replaced it twice, I've had to give copies away. So this is the 4th time I've bought it. Favourite recipe? All are good, but the stuffed onions are exceptional. We are a mixed household in terms of dietary preferences, but when I make these at Christmas everyone insists on there being plenty to go round. Lentil and coriander cannelloni are delicious and the bean and vegetable stew with herb dumplings has been a flavourful, filling and easy-to-prepare staple for decades now.
