Beware of 10 year old electronics and be prepared to do some repair.
I purchased this product because I have had good luck with a similar vintage Sony DB940. The Sony receiver arrived with two layers of bubble wrap "protection." The volume know was pressed in tightly due to a hard knock it received in shipping. It worked fine for a day or so but then began to exhibit intermittent operation. I troubleshot the intermittent connections and determined that the receiver was damaged in shipping and due to poor design by Sony. Sony does not properly heat sink the output stage driver ICs which causes them to operate VERY hot. Hot enough to lightly char the PC board. The heat also causes the solder joints to fail. Further, this receiver uses the chassis as a ground path which, after being knocked around in shipping causes poor connections to appear. After fixing numerous solder joints and tightening up connections, the receiver works well. Another design defect is that the heat sink is insufficiently sized which causes the receiver to operate very hot when pushed hard. The fan doesn't come on until the cover of the reciver is too hot to hold your hand on it. Overall, I am dissapointed with Sony's ES line.
