INTERESTING TWIST ON THE 'HIT-MAN FOR HIRE' GENRE!
I saw this film when it came out on video in 1987, and my opinion of it hasn't changed with the passage of years. The two stars (James Woods and Brian Dennehy), being such excellent actors in their own right are always good value for money, and the pairing of them here works really well. I think this film is an interesting study of the relationship between 'the good guy' and 'the bad guy' and the revelation that the bad guy is actually more complex and not as completely bad as either of them thought. That said, purists would probably denounce the improbability of the storyline, but my attitude is that well drawn characters, good performance and well crafted scripts are what movies are about, which in turn enables you to suspend your disbelief and enjoy it for its own sake. This is a thriller and full of excitement, but not at the expense of the dialogue or characterisation, unlike most 'action' films made now, which have negligible plot, incomprehensible dialogue and owing more to computer skills than performance artistry. My recommendation would be that you take a look at 'Best Seller' and risk wasting an hour and a half out of your life. If you like it, like me, you'll watch it again. If you disagree, you can write your own review!

This One's A Must-Have!
Simply the best cop show in the world. Ever! In Season 2, Jimmy Smits takes over where David Caruso leaves off. For those new to this series (where have you been hiding???!) this can be watched and enjoyed in its own right, but I would recommend you get hold of Season 1, as well as the recently released Season 3. Throughout, the central cast member, Andy Sipowicz, a flawed but basically decent man, is played to perfection by Dennis Franz and is such a wonderful creation he lights up the screen. Over the years he has been the constant presence where others have come and gone, but the programme has lost nothing for that, as each character is as well crafted as the last. Along with Andy, the viewer comes to know and accept Bobby Simone (Smits) as his new partner, and it is so absorbing ones empathy takes the form of a mutual evolution. This series has everything even our best home grown police series don't, nor could ever aspire to - great acting, excitement, fabulous plots and locations, scripts to die for, believable characters, etc etc etc.... In just one episode there are a roller-coaster ride of emotions on display including pathos and poignancy amid the grime and cynicism of fighting the losing battle against the vilest the criminal underworld can produce. The effects of personal relationships at work and in their private lives are sympathetic but never mawkish, sad and humorous all at once. Give yourself a treat, ditch the wooden, sterotypical, amateurish, pathetically patronising politically correct police 'drama' on offer in the UK and get down and dirty with the people who know how to do it. No one does cop shows like the Americans, and NYPD Blue is the cream of the crop, it's dateless, a classic. It cannot be faulted.
