Reliable and brilliant
This is my first break into baking, my mother used to swear by Mary years ago and was an amazing baker. I thought I couldn't and didn't want to really do cakes, sweet stuff and pasties. Mistake! The recipes are astonishingly reliable, fabulous and work every time ( provided you follow the recipe in full). I am now blaming this book for an increase in weight but the pleasure of being able to present edible and attractive bakes for friends and family's acclaim is worth it. I now feel I can bake competently. It has loads in from classic sponges, children's cakes to soufflés and sweets. Everything is explained from equipment to lining trays so you know what you're doing. Wouldn't be without it now.

Good solid Charles de Lint
A very human story that still weaves mysticism through it. You are led along Grace's story by the frustrations of emotions and plain bad luck and the hope of a happy ending. A very good read.
