Great first series
1 of 1 found this helpful Jimmy Nail, in the role of a factory worker who aspires to make a living as a country singer, is brilliant, as usual, and the whole of the first series is both funny and engrossing, with great music and cast. The only fly in the ointment is the actor who plays his agent. His part is as a duplicitous coke addict who constantly betrays Jed (Jimmy Nail); I found him so unappealing to watch and listen to that I was tempted to fast-forward his scenes. The series ends just as Jed's career is about to take off.
In the second series, the ghastly agent has been terminated, which should be a good sign; but I felt throughout that it should never have been made. The plot dribbles along as though no-one really has their heart in it. The DVD is well worth buying, though - if for the first series alone.

Great music - serious miscasting lets it down.
I bought the DVD because I love salsa and was interested to find out more about Hector Lavoe. In that sense, the film scores highly. The atmosphere of the times, and the milieu out of which salsa sprung, are well-presented. My big criticism, though, is that Marc Anthony is totally miscast in the main role - it's plain that he's there because he can sing and because, at the time, he was married to JLo - he spends most of the time looking miserable/perplexed (difficult
to tell which is which). It's hard to believe that Lavoe was such a dull character.
